Domain Knowledge

Domain Knowledge is the knowledge of a particular industry

domain

Domain knowledge is the knowledge about the environment in which the business organizations operates, and it encompasses the understanding of the industry dynamics, history, sectors and segments, business model, competitive landscape, value chain, customers, supply chain, challenges and the industry specific strategies of the target enterprise.

Domain knowledge is necessary because it provides the ability to make good judgments and quick decisions and empower the users to deal with complex business situations.  For implementing e-commerce project it is necessary to learn about the business that you are trying to automate on the internet.  Gaining understanding of the industry means a smarter analysis, clearer logic underlying business decisions, closer attention to key dimensions of implementation and operation, and more disciplined performance management.

On the lighter side, here is a joke:

Get Domain expertise

Get Domain expertise

There was a family with one kid. One day the mother was out and dad was in charge of the kid, who just turned three.

Someone had given the kid a little ‘tea set’ as a birthday gift and it was one of her favourite toys. Daddy was in the living room engrossed in the evening news when kid brought Daddy a little cup of ‘tea’, which was just water. After several cups of tea and lots of praise for from father for such yummy tea, kid’s Mom came home.

Dad made her wait in the living room to watch the kid bring him a cup of tea, because it was ‘just the cutest thing!!’

Mom waited, and sure enough, the kid comes down the hall with a cup of tea for Daddy and she watches him drink it up, then she says to him, ‘Did it ever come to your mind that the only place that baby can reach to get water is the toilet??’
….Mothers know!

Moral Of The Story:  Domain knowledge is very important!  Else your project may fail.

Communicating between end-users and software developers is often difficult. They must find a common language to communicate in.  It is necessary to learn the jargon (vocabulary)  to communicate effectively.   The consultant may play an important role to bridge the gap between business executives and software engineers.

Examples of Domain Knowledge that may require for a project in the respective business category.
  • Automotive Domain.
  • Banking Domain.
  • Education Domain.
  • Engineering Domain.
  • FMCG Domain.
  • Retail Domain.
  • Telecom Domain.
  • Travel Domain.

In ERP / e-commerce project, domain knowledge is knowledge about the environment in which the target system operates. Domain knowledge is important, because it usually must be learned from software users in the domain (as domain specialists/experts), rather than from software developers. Expert’s domain knowledge is transformed in computer programs and active data, for example in a set of rules in knowledge bases, by knowledge engineers.

Look who is hiding face on facebook or LinkedIn?

This is about profile picture on the social media sites.  Here are some do and do not for smart internet marketing on the networking portals.

Would you like to meet a person who says:  “Hey, network with me, trust me, but I will hide my face”?

Well I don’t think so. That is the point for networking sites: picture is required.  Your profile is the most precious real estate out there on a social media site, like, facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, twitter, etc.  Leverage these Web 2.0 platforms to market you business.

If you are casual about your profile on the social media, chances are others will also take you casually. You do not have to be a software engineer (I don’t know why people always give example of a rocket scientist?), to understand that the first thing we see when checking out a new LinkedIn contact, Facebook friend, or Twitter follower connection is a profile photo.

  • Your own picture is extremely important in the profile.  We usually recognize a friend or old colleague or classmate more reliably by face rather than by name.  I know that there may be some professionals who would prefer to not be exposed to profile photos from people they may NOT know.  This setting can be done in most social media sites like LinkedIn or facebook. Such setting will allow others to see your picture only if you have accepted them as a friend. Having a good profile picture may be more important than you think!
  • On one hand we want our friends and contacts to trust us, on the other hand face are kept a secret; this is not a good idea, in the Global village.
  • Uploading a cartoon picture instead of a proper profile picture is not a good idea.  Seriously.
  • Not able to find a picture to upload on the social media site is not a valid reason.  You can even use a cell phone camera to take a picture and upload.  It is that easy.  Avoid other things in background, plain background is recommended. Do not put a group photo.
  • Do NOT put a logo in place of your profile picture.
  • It is recommended that you put your own picture only and not with someone else, even if you love or admire him or her.  Profile picture with other person, on social networking web site is not the place for group photos.  The facebook photos album, Picasa, or Flickr is just the right place for such group pictures and share with your contacts.
  • I encourage people to include photo in the profile, because it shows you’re comfortable with yourself.
  • Profile picture on social media websites is important from job point of view too. Yes, from HR point of view – as a candidate you would prefer transparency, and not look for associating with such a company which may filter bio by color, gender, race or age.

I strongly advice people who have still not uploaded picture on social networking sites, to do so without further delay.  Think from mere security point of view.  Have you attended a social get-to-gather or a party where guests wearing funny masks? Would you share your ‘happenings’ with such people? Sometime someone can easily get in the crowd and impersonate.

Tip: Picture also makes your profile a lot more pleasant and trust worthy.   It is recommended that you take a head-shot, rather than the picture of you in front of a Pyramid or the Taj.  Sites like facebook allow you to make your Albums to show these kinds of photographs.  Do not put very old pictures.  I would not like to exchange business card with a person who is covering his / her face, in a conference or a professional seminar, would you?

I am writing this topic of profile picture in this blog based on my own practical experience of networking with over 1000 professionals on the LinkedIn, over 700 friends on facebook, etc.  If you have already put a proper picture in your profile, that is good, but you will be surprised when you check your connections.  There are many who are still ignorant.  Do you agree with me? Just share this important guidelines with them by clicking button provided at the bottom of this blog.

Type currency symbols directly from keyboard.

Type currency symbols of 132 countries directly from keyboard such as “€”, ₡, Kč, etc. in your word documents, or blog, web site, without using any special software.  This is possible by using your numeric keypad as follows [it is that simple] no downloads necessary.

First activate your numeric key pad.  If you are using a laptop the J K L keys etc. will change to numeric keypad, 1 2 3 and so on.  This is used by data-entry operators when he or she has to enter lots of numeric data, therefore you might not be using it often.  Caution: Do not forget to again make the same normal, otherwise instead of left arrow it will type 4, or on laptop when you type J it will type 1.  Study the method and the currency symbols of 132 countries given in the following document:

Internet programming and Cyber Laws book written by Prof. Jyotindra Zaveri – second edition published.

“I have gone through the pages of this learned treatise on Internet programming and cyber law. … Though India woke up much late —- as late as 2000—-when its Parliament passed Information Technology act—-it had the proud privilege of catching up with even the developed countries of the world. Prof.  Zaveri has poured his lifelong scholarship into bringing up this book. I commend this book to all those interested not only in Information Technology but also its legal aspects.”

Prof. D.  G. Kolhatkar, M.A (Eco),  LL-M.   Advocate.  Retired Export Manager,     Philips India Ltd., New Delhi.    23rd July, 2010.

This book is useful for professionals who are planning to use the internet for managing business, as well as for students who are specializing in Information Technology.

Excerpts of the book:

Follow these basic precautions while doing electronic banking:

  • Always access a bank’s internet banking website only by typing the correct website address into the browser.  Never click a link sent in an e-mail that is supposed to link to the bank’s website.  Always type the web address of your bank into the browser space.
  • A spurious link could be a fraudster’s phishing attack designed to collect personal information.  This information is then used for accessing accounts and making unauthorized transfer of funds
  • When in doubt, immediately contact the bank.
  • Always log off completely when you have finished your internet banking activity.  Simply closing the window may not close the banking session
  • If your computer is virus infected, your session may be hijacked by a fraudsters and financial transactions can be made without your knowledge.
  • It is also recommended to disconnect  from the Internet when you are not using it.
  • Never do online banking transactions on a shared or public computer – e.g. Cybercafé.
  • Deploy anti-spy ware, Firewall, Anti-Phishing, Anti-Spam, Piracy protection software.
What is phising?
Phising pronounced ‘fishing’ refers to fishing out sensitive user information such as your credit card number.  • This is done by masquerading (Camouflaged) as a trustworthy entity.  This usually is an email with clickable hyper link.  This email comes to your inbox with a familiar bank name as a disguise.  Example: Say, you have account in ICICI bank.  The email will come as if from ICICI and ask you to click on a link.  This will take you to a similar website (as if it is ICICI bank) and ask you to enter credit card number.
Email such as, million dollar lottery or “want to transfer money to India, my friend, help me” are a sent to get all private information from the recipient.   Never reply such emails.

Educate people:

99% of people by and large think that e-mail address cannot be traced. But if they come to know that almost all the cases, no matter what wrong name they give, what e-mail address they open, they can still be traced. As a result, cyber crime rate will fall.  It is just a matter of education.

Read the book by Mr. Zaveri.  The first part of the book briefly introduces internet programming.  The second part of this book is focusing on the cyber law and cyber crime.  There is a shortage of internet professionals in this area. These chapters discuss briefly the challenges of using internet in our daily life, such as email and banking.   The shortage of cyber law specialists can be filled up by you.   Internet languages are exciting new Web development technologies that have taken the wide world by storm.

This book is written by Prof. Jyotindra Zaveri and published by Tech-Max Publications, Pune, India.

First ERP or first website?

Plan a business transformation

Many companies have made a mistake of first publishing a website, and then deploy ERP.  But, later realized that website is bringing much more business than they are able to manage with the legacy systems.  So, they try to hurriedly put the ERP, as second step.  It is recommended that you streamline your business processes first, by deploying ERP, and then tap the power of internet to expand the business.
The figure shows schematic of an automation process.  The first step is ERP.  That lays the foundation to manage growth.   How can you do web mining without ERP or a website?    Without using internet, business will be limited to geographical location.
Progressive organizations use internet to connect to office using remote access.   Depending on the business model, some organization opts for payment gateway i.e. an interface with the bank server computer.   Business Intelligence (BI) software  solution depends on the ‘On-Line Transaction Processing’ (OLTP).   The ERP software meticulously captures the transaction and stores in a database.
Most multinational companies, as well as many public sector organizations, have adopted ERP and increasingly small and medium sized enterprises have been following suit. Indeed, by 2003 ERP formed the backbone of many application architectures and were being extended into developments such as ebusiness and eGovernance.  After ERP, the next step is, to publish a simple website (passive), followed by more interactive site, and later a payment gateway for transacting money (Digital money).   All this leads to next step of data mining and web mining.  Next plan is to integrate ERP with web 2.0.
